Gainesville is known as the “Poultry Capital of the World”. During the 1996 Summer Olympics, rowing and kayaking medal competitions were held in Gainesville. The town was also the site of a tornado that destroyed more than 200 buildings and killed more than 100 people.

Gainesville is known for its arts and culture scene, and the city hosts a number of events. During the summer, the city hosts a festival, First Fridays, that features live music and food trucks. Gainesville’s historical legacy was cemented when a gold rush brought business growth. The town became a resort center. It was also home to the state’s first private mint for gold coins, established by Templeton Reid in 1830.
