There’s no question that Lake Lanier has changed the face of Gainesville. The lake has spawned new economic opportunities, new growth, and new recreational opportunities. However, the lake’s best days may be behind us. As a result, there’s a definite need for more oomph in the lakefront communities. The GPRA has its work cut out for it. This includes a new aquatics center, new recreational facilities and more boating and fishing opportunities. It’s also no secret that Gainesville is one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. The city’s population has doubled in the past 15 years. A thriving economy means better services and products, and a better quality of life. GPRA’s task is to keep Gainesville moving forward.

The GPRA is in the business of maintaining landscaped areas, enhancing existing parks and facilities and enhancing the local community through programs and initiatives. The organization is also the official park and recreation authority for Hall County. Among its achievements is the award for being the first in the state to receive accreditation from the CAPRA (Capital Area Planning and Recreation Association) for being an excellent parks and recreation agency.

For the octumer, GPRA’s budget has room for improvement. There are a number of suggestions to consider in the near future, including re-imaging existing piers into more interactive destinations, enhancing existing facilities, adding new facilities, and improving connectivity across the lake. In addition, there’s a lot of room for improvement with the dwindling number of public boats that make their way across Lake Lanier. A number of communities in the metro Atlanta area are similarly challenged. There’s a need for new parks and recreational facilities to keep up with the ever-growing population. More information
